Damp Streetwear is a retail shop that has recently discovered the power of online business and how it can improve their sales. Damp Streetwear is owned by Matt Dampney, he is the founder of cutting edge clothing brand and also owns a design studio in Australia. Matt Dampney has decided to start the online retailing for the clothing side of his business, this is to increase his sales and reduce the costs of running a business on the street such as shop rental.

Matt says his business used to pay between $20,000-50,000 annually for the cost of shop rental which is very expensive. This was before he found out about the idea of online business, which gave him a substantial opportunity to expand and market his business.

Online sales on the increase

Figures from the Commonwealth Bank show online sales in Australia represent 5.4 per cent of all retail sales. This is expected to rise, with figures in the UK showing 10 per cent on sales are online, and in the USA 7 per cent are online.

Government pours millions into online retail study

The Australian Federal Government has committed to studying Australians’ online retail spending habits by providing funding of $2.1 million dollars over 4 years to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The study will track Australians’ online retail spending habits, and how online sales might be affecting bricks and mortar stores.

Launched in 2000, and attracting many doubters who didn’t believe women would purchase luxury items online, it has been so successful that it was sold in 2010 for 350 million pounds.

New figures show growth in online shopping

A Sydney Morning Herald article has some new figures showing strong growth in online shopping.

Data analytics company Quantium has revealed that there is a 20 per cent annual increase in the number of people who shop online.

The makeup of these shoppers? 40% are over 45, while those aged under 25 account for only 15% of total transactions.
