An Australia Post official has revealed that the traditional mail carrier will likely see a drop of $200 million in business this year.
In addition to losing $200 million in business this year, those losses will increasingly get “bigger and bigger as people move from physical to digital communications,” said Catriona Larritt, who is General Manager, of Post Digital at Australia Post at the Digital Productivity Conference in Brisbane recently.
The organisation has been losing about 4 to 5% of physical mail volume since 2008 and this year, it will deliver one billion fewer letters than in 2008.
She also said that Australia Post is three years into a five-year transitional program to address the shift from physical to digital communications. So far the program has resulted in the relatively new Digital Mailbox service and other e-commerce initiatives.

According to an article published at the Sydney herald Newspaper, the business-to-consumer e-commerce has passed a trillion US dollars in a single year for the first time. In 2012, more than 10 million people, or almost 50% of the population, had bought something online, spending an average of $3,547 per person.
What is more interesting about this news is that the average expenditure per online buyer in Australia is higher than in the US and the UK by 54 per cent. It is also expected that the average expenditure per online buyer for Australia will grow by 7.2 per cent this year.
This means that the physical stores are definitely going to be affected by this change, it is the time for online stores to dominate the market.

A rivalry that’s better known on the footy and rugby fields has moved to the internet.
Sydney and Melbourne are both vying to be the first Australian cities to own a top level domain.
This would mean addresses such as google.sydney would be possible.
Present rules dictate only top level domains such as .com, .org & .net etc are available, along with international country codes like .au and .nz
It’s not cheap to apply though, setting the NSW Premier’s Office and the City of Melbourne back $US185,000 a piece.

Less than a year after the first iPad was released, the iPad 2 will hit Australian markets on 25 March 2011.
And whats in store in the new models? Well the same price tag for starters, but it is said to be thinner, lighter, faster, and have dual front and back facing cameras. And the choice of black or white colouring.
Steve Jobs is very confident in his device, saying ‘Everybody’s got a tablet, will it be the year of the copycats?” He proclaims that Apple has a 90% market share.
That share may be erroded however, by the number of new tablets coming onto the market. The closest competitor to the iPad is said to the Motorola Xoom.

SMH reports today that Telstra and the NBN Co have hammered through another part of the national broadband network deal today.
The “key commercial terms” have been announced, so Telstra now has the green light to shut down the copper network and share its infrastructure with the NBN Co.
Now, the Telstra shareholders will need to vote on whether to proceed with the deal, with the vote to take place earlier than July.
Telstra itself will be hoping for a ‘yes’ vote, given that its recently released half year financials showed a 36% profit decline.
